Do you have access to your domain name?

Would you let your auto mechanic have the title to your car just because he knows how to fix your radiator problem? Would you give your house deed to the lawn care company just because they can keep your yard looking nice?

The answer should be an overwhelming, “No!” Yet many web designers or marketing companies own the domain name of their clients websites. The domain name could be the most important part of the website. Without it no one would be able to find you online. Now, this isn’t a problem for every website, but is something I have seen more and more of as and businesses are building or updating their websites.

Domain name issues don’t seem to pop that often, due to the infrequent need to access them, but when they do it can completely handcuff the website and in some cases even cause the website to go offline.

If you do not have direct access to whatever service hosts your domain (GoDaddy.com, NetworkSolutions) you need to get access NOW! If you can contact the person that does have access, and at least get a login and password, that would also be sufficient. At that point you could at least make any changes that you need to or even transfer the domain name to another account.

The complete solution is to create an account at Godaddy.com and transfer the domain to your own personal account where you can always have access. Even if you forget the login, they can help verify you and then get your credentials reset.

Don’t let your inexperience with the internet affect how you run your business. Your domain name is just as important as a title or deed and without it you are in trouble.
